Small lotus tattoo on the ribs
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A small, simple lotus flower is inked in black on the side of a woman's torso, just below the arm. The design uses thin, clean outlines with a few inner details and no shading. The tattoo is shown against bare skin beside a white lace-trimmed halter dress, with the rest of the frame softly lit and mostly out of focus.

The gardener's boy is already knee-deep in the pond when you reach the wall, his arms full of wet reeds and his voice pitched high with panic. The lotuses have closed in the night, he says, every one of them folded tight like a fist. You tell him to stop shouting before the steward hears. Then you wade out yourself, the mud sucking at your sandals, and pick a single bud from the nearest stem and turn it over in your palm.

Your grandmother taught you what the old priests say: that the lotus rises out of the dark water each morning, opens to the sun, and sinks again at dusk, and that this is how the sun itself is born. You have never believed a flower could carry a god. But the bud in your hand is small and dense, its petals still stiff, and when you press your thumb to its base the stem is cool, as if it has been lying under the river all night.
That afternoon the steward comes down to inspect the damage, and with him is the scribe Khenti, who has come to copy the harvest accounts. He studies the shut flowers for a long time. Then he takes a reed pen from behind his ear, draws a lotus on a flake of limestone in a few clean strokes, and presses it into your hand. Tell the gardener the flowers are not dead, he says. They are only waiting for someone to open the door.
At dusk you carry the stone back to the pond and set it on the water beside the stems. The lotuses sink one by one, and you sit with the boy until the last light leaves the reeds. Before dawn you are back on the bank, and the first petal is already lifting, pale gold at its edge, while the boy stands beside you with his mouth open.
