Black geometric band tattoo on a lower leg

Geometric · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A bold band of black ink wraps around the lower leg, built from interlocking circles, arcs and radiating segments. The linework is solid and even, with some shapes filled in and others left as outlines. The greyscale photograph shows a bare foot at the top of the frame and dark fabric at the bottom.

"Mind the sluice, Nell, the water's climbed past the second post," said Old Harkness, and she went down the bank with the lantern swinging from her wrist. Nobody in Sallow Fen trusted the sea wall that autumn, and the pumps had been wheezing since Michaelmas.

Her grandmother had been the wheelwright's daughter, and the family still kept the old habit of cutting a ring into every timber they set in the ground. Circles inside circles, arcs that met at the joints, little segments fanned out like spokes so the wood would take the strain and pass it along. Folk said the marks were for luck. Nell thought they were arithmetic, the sort the wheelwright had once chalked across the barn wall, and she traced them with her thumb while the gale leaned on the door.

At the third post the sluice gate groaned. She pressed a hawthorn stake into the mud, wound the rope through the carved rings, and drew each arc tight against the next until the whole band locked, shapes biting shapes like cogs. The water checked. It hesitated at the rings the way a dog stops at a threshold, then sank back an inch, then another.

By dawn the wind had dropped and the drowned bell in the church tower began to sound beneath the surface, muffled and slow. Harkness came along the bank with his cap in his hands. "Who taught you that knot?" he asked. Nell looked at the wet black rings on the post. "Nobody taught me," she said. "It was already on the timber."
