The fair pulled out of Harrowgate on Tuesday with the wagons still ticking as they cooled, and I am writing this on the back of a ticket roll because the caravan has no proper table. You will say I am sentimental. Perhaps. But you should have seen Mr Abernethy's face when the strongman's boy came running across the field with a braided cord in his fist, saying his mother had sent it after me.

It was plaited from three strands of waxed black thread, tight as rigging on a mast, with a little silver crescent knotted into the middle where the ends meet. The boy said it was for the girl who had sat with the fortune tent's flap open all last week, the one who laughed at the wrong moments. I told him I was no such girl. He shrugged and said his mother was never wrong about who needed a moon.

I have worn it since, and I will not pretend it is a trinket. The thread has gone soft from the rain and the crescent has dulled to the colour of an old spoon. Yesterday, on the Scarborough road, a lorry shed its load across the lane and we sat for three hours in the dark, and I found my thumb going round and round that little curve as if it might tell me something.

I shall send you the cord when I get home, so you can see the knot for yourself. I do not think I will ever understand it. Give Mum my love, and tell her the lights are still on at the pier.
