White ink mandala on the back of a hand

Geometric · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A black and white photograph shows a white ink mandala tattoo on the back of a hand, close to the wrist. The design is built from concentric circles, dots and triangular points arranged in a symmetrical radial pattern. The fine white linework and soft shading sit on pale skin against a textured fabric background, and the hand fills the centre of the frame.

Old Hanne ran the galley of the Marigold for thirty winters, and she never once let a boy stir the pot until he had watched her draw a ring on the scrubbed bench with flour. She would sweep her palm across the wood, press it down and lift it away, and a pale round shape would be left there, dotted and rayed like a sun seen through frost. The boys thought it was for luck. Hanne said it was for keeping count.

Count of what, the boys asked, and she told them seven circles for the men who had gone over the side off the Skerry Bank, and one more each time a sailor came home from a bad watch. The rings grew inward, one inside the next, until by the year Pim Adler came aboard, fourteen and coughing, the bench was crowded with marks that no one could see unless the lamp was low and the light came in at an angle.

Pim asked why, each night, she brushed the rings away with her sleeve and started again smaller. 'Because the sea is not sorry,' she said, 'and a count that gets too big stops meaning anything. Keep it small enough to hold.' He didn't understand, so he watched. One night in a gale the stockpot went over and scalded the floor, and Pim, shaking, pressed a floured finger to the bench and drew a circle without thinking about it at all.

Hanne came in, saw it, and said nothing. She set the kettle down on the new ring and let it sit there while the ship groaned and righted herself. The Marigold came through the morning. Pim kept the bench clean after that, and when he drew, he drew round, and he drew small.
