Black ink circle with splash on shoulder

Blackwork · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A bold black ink circle, open at the top and softly brushed, sits on the shoulder with a spray of splashes and fine dots trailing down towards the arm. The solid ink edges fade into grey shading and speckled dotwork, giving a sense of motion. The photograph is taken close up, with a dark sleeve at the top edge of the frame.

Nell had been told the lock would take an hour, so she spent the first twenty minutes watching the water instead. The Sallow cut was low after a month without rain, and the chamber sat half empty, its green weed hanging from the brickwork like wet hair. Her father stood on the balance beam with his brush case under one arm, muttering at the gate paddles, while the barge drifted behind them with the kettle already singing in the galley.

He had bought the brush in Gravesend the year before she was born, he said, from a man who sold ink by the bottle and would not say where he had learned to draw a circle in one stroke. You loaded the brush, you did not stop, and if the ring closed you had it. If it didn't, you pinned a fresh sheet to the cabin wall and started again. Her father kept three hundred of those sheets rolled in the bow locker, each with a ring that almost closed.

When the top paddles lifted, the water came through the gate with a roar and a white spray that hit the stonework and hung in the air. Nell watched it break off the lip of the sluice and scatter fine drops across her sleeve and the wet iron rail. Her father laughed, flicked the brush, and drew the circle in the air with his wrist, leaving it open at the top where the flow broke away.

That evening she took the brush from him and, on the last clean sheet, made a ring that would not close. She let the ink run where it wanted and flicked the spare drops onto the paper with her thumb, and her father, looking over her shoulder, said nothing at all.
