Abstract bird outline tattoo in black ink
Black and grey · Photo
A single bold, abstract figure resembling a bird with a curved neck and head at the top, tapering into a long, sinuous tail that bends at the bottom. The linework is solid black with smooth, tapered strokes and no shading or fill beyond the outline. The tattoo sits on a close crop of skin, with the composition running vertically down the frame.

The swan on Hollis pond had grown fat on the windfalls we were not supposed to throw over the wall, and by the last week of August it had stopped being shy of us. It came up the bank whenever the ladders creaked, neck bent into a question mark, waiting to see what we had brought.

Mr Pryce said the bird was nobody's and everybody's, the way the orchard was supposed to be, but he said it while looking at the ledger, and the ledger had a figure in it he did not like. The men from the council had been up twice with their clipboards and their talk about culverts. Nobody said the word drain out loud, but the water sat lower every morning that week, the mud showing grey along the margin like a tide line running the wrong way.
On the Friday I found the swan on the far side of the wall with a loop of blue baling twine caught round one foot. I had the pruning knife in my apron pocket because I always did. It took me twenty minutes on my knees in the wet grass, the bird hissing at first and then, once the cord fell away, going very still, as if it had decided I was not worth the effort of a bite. It pushed off, tail trailing a long black ribbon across the water, and it did not look back at the orchard at all.
I finished the last row alone. The apples in my basket were bruised where I had gripped them, and I left them in the shade for Mr Pryce to count. When I came down the ladder for the final time the pond was flat and bright, and far out on it the swan had folded its neck back into the shape of a dropped bow and was drifting towards the reeds where the water still ran deep.
