Tree inside a black enso circle on a forearm
Japanese · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A solid black tree with a rounded canopy and curved trunk sits inside a loose, brushstroke enso circle. The ring has ragged, dry-brush edges that thicken and thin around the circle, while the tree has a smooth, filled silhouette. The image is taken straight on under even indoor light, with a plain skin tone background and a sheet of plastic beneath the arm.

The rain has been coming down over Saltergate market since before dawn, and you have stacked your crates of bruised windfalls under the tarpaulin the way your mother taught you, sloped so the water runs off the edge. Next door the pottery man is swearing at a cracked bowl. Nobody is buying. You are counting coins into a tin when a woman in a grey wool coat stops at your stall, her hair plastered flat, and asks whether you have seed from the oldest tree in the county.

You tell her you sell apples, not seed, and that the oldest tree you know was the pear on the canal bank, the one the council felled last winter. She nods as if you have answered some other question. She opens a paper packet, empty except for a dry husk, and says her grandmother kept one like it in a tin under the stairs. Then she pays for a windfall with a pound coin, turns it over twice, and walks off towards the bridge without another word.
That evening you go down to the canal with a trowel and a torch. The stump is black with wet, and the cut face has already sprouted a fringe of green. Between two roots, where the clay holds the rain, you find a single brown seed no bigger than a thumbnail, and you put it in your pocket without quite knowing why. On the towpath the drops strike the water and open into rings, one inside another.
In the morning the stall is soaked and the tarpaulin sags, but there is a pound coin on your crate and a fresh line of footprints in the mud, curving round the stall and closing exactly where they began. You open your palm. The seed has split in the night, and a pale root is curling out of it, turning slowly as though it already knows which way the ground is.
