You learned the fair's routes the way other people learn hymns, by repetition until your feet knew them. Dunmow, Harlow, the sodden field behind the Co-op at Thurrock. At every stop the rides went up and the grass went down, and every stop you swept the same grey soil from under the tea urn. This year the soil under the urn was black and sweet, and on the third morning at Harlow a single green spear had pushed up through the cracked concrete beside the generator.

You told nobody. Old Mr Penhale, who ran the coconut shy, would have blamed the rain. Your sister, who sold candyfloss, would have charged people a penny to look. So you watered it from a dented milk bottle before the gates opened, and you kept the tarpaulin rolled back. By the weekend there were stems as high as your knee and leaves that folded and unfolded like wet paper. Two tulips opened on the side nearest the dodgems, dark as a bruise, and a heavy-headed bloom came after them, clumsy, as if it had only read about how roses were supposed to look.

On Monday the lorries were already idling when Penhale came round the back of the generator with a spade. He stopped, looked at the flowers for a long time, and then at the flint the stems had split around. He did not say anything. He just leaned the spade against the fence and went back to his shy.

You cut one tulip with the knife you use for rope, wrapped it in a damp handkerchief and put it in your coat. When the convoy pulled out, you looked in the wing mirror. The patch stood on the hardstanding where the ground had been bare, every leaf lifted, as though someone had waved it off.
