Black line drawing of a symmetrical mandala with lotus-style petals and stippled dotwork edges, shown as a tattoo design on white paper.

Black line mandala design

Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash

A circular mandala drawn in black ink on white paper, built from a central rosette surrounded by layered petal shapes and scrolls. The outer petal edges are shaded with stippled dots, while the interior uses fine, even linework with small dot accents. The image is evenly lit and centred, with the design filling most of the frame on a plain light grey background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The last week of August, and the Bramleys at Hollow Lane were dropping faster than we could gather them. Wasps drowned in the windfalls, and the grass under the old tree had gone the colour of weak tea. Uncle Ned sat on the bottom rung of the ladder with his father's brass compass in his lap, its point blunted from years of pressing into card.

He drew mandalas on the backs of feed sacks. He'd put a dot in the middle, walk the compass round, and add petals one ring at a time. 'Every ring has to hold the one inside it,' he said, 'or the whole thing falls apart.' I was nine and thought he meant the apples. I spent that summer at the kitchen table copying him, and my circles never closed.

The year the lorry stopped coming, he stopped climbing. His hand shook so badly the lines came out wobbling, like ripples on a pond. One evening he slid a sheet across to me and asked me to finish the outer edge. 'Stipple it,' he said. 'Dots, not lines. Make it look like frost on the rim, or dust on a window, something that's going.' I dotted until my wrist ached, and he never said whether it was right.

In September I walked the rows alone. Under the old tree the windfalls had landed in a ring close to the trunk, a looser ring beyond that, then scatter at the edge where the grass grew long. I stood on the bottom rung and saw it: a rosette, petals, a border of small dark spots. I left the fruit where it lay. I took his compass from the kitchen drawer and pressed the point into the grass where the middle would be.
