Black kanji lettering on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a forearm with a line of black kanji characters running across it, set in a clean, upright lettering style. The ink is solid black with crisp edges and slightly soft fading in places, and the skin shows light freckles and fine hair. The forearm fills most of the frame with the lettering centred, and the background is out of focus.

Dear Kenji,

The notice came on Tuesday, pinned by the postman to the door of the cannery office where anyone with a bicycle could read it. Mr Oda read it aloud to the women in the drying shed, slowly, as if the words might change if he hurried. The plant would close at the end of the autumn run. Then he read the second paragraph, which said the company had reconsidered and we would have one more season. Nobody cheered. We stood with our knives in our hands and looked at each other, because one more season is not a future, only a longer goodbye.
I have been thinking about how clear everything has become. Mother's cough, the price of rice, the way Sato-san's boy stopped writing to the girl at the post office. Everything looks sharp, like a photograph taken in cold winter air, and it is bitter to see so plainly. Yet there is something rare in it too. We have been given time to decide what we will do with the year, and most people in this town have never been offered that.
So last night I went down to the harbour and counted the boats. Eleven. Father's was the twelfth, though it has sat pulled up on the sand since spring. I sat beside it for an hour and copied the names of the streets I know onto the back of my wage slip, so I would not forget them.
Come home for the harvest festival if you can. Bring nothing but yourself. We will make the most of the one season we have, and then we will see what the sea decides.
Your sister, Haruko
