The mule would not take the pass until the lamp was lit, and Dimitris Varvitsiotis argued with it for an hour before the snow came in earnest. Below him the road to Metsovo was a grey thread. His nephew had a fever, and the crate lashed to the mule's flank held six brown bottles wrapped in yesterday's newspaper.

At the summit cairn he unwound the scarf from his face. Drovers had always left messages under the big stone, a habit from when the roads were mule tracks and a man might die between villages. Dimitris had never added to them. Tonight he dug out a stub of carpenter's pencil and wrote on the back of a tobacco paper, pressing hard because his fingers had gone stupid with cold.

He wrote the three things his grandmother said a person was made of: the soul, the body, the mind. The soul he understood. The body he was carrying down the mountain on his own two legs. The mind was the part he could not get to sit still, and as he looked at the last word the wind tore a gust of snow across the page and blurred it into grey.

He folded the paper face down under the stone so the wind could not take it and started the descent with the mule snorting ahead of him. At the bottom, his sister would ask what the pass had cost him. He would tell her only that the animal had been stubborn, which was true, and that the bottles had not broken, which was truer than he could say.
