Typewriter quote on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of an inner forearm resting on a patterned cushion, with a line of black text tattooed along the arm. The quote is set in a typewriter-style typeface with crisp, even strokes and two lines of text that run diagonally across the skin. The image is in black ink only, with the natural skin tones and soft background forming the rest of the composition.

Come closer, the lot of you, before Mr Pilling switches the urn off and shoos us into the car park. You remember Hester Pym? She sat by the radiator in Lower Five with ink on her cuffs. Her father sold secondhand typewriters from a shop on Bell Street, and the whole town assumed she'd end up typing invoices for the gasworks.

She didn't. The summer we left, she wrote a book on his old Olympia, one key that stuck so every capital A came out with a smudge like a thumbprint. Forty-one pages, bound with garden string. She posted one copy to a publisher in London and licked the stamp three times to make sure it held. Then she waited the whole winter and told nobody.
The reply came in a brown envelope, two lines typed on a machine I'd know anywhere, the A's smudged just the same: today you are you, that is truer than true. there is no one alive who is you-er than you. No signature, no letter, no contract. Her father swore he'd never seen the paper before, and Hester, who had never once lied to any of us, said the machine had typed it on its own.
I don't know what to make of that. Maybe the old keys remember what the person at them forgets. What I do know is the envelope hangs framed behind the counter of that shop, which is a launderette now, and the smudged A still catches the light when the dryers spin. So when you see Hester tonight, don't ask about the book. Just tell her the A's still stuck, and she'll know exactly who you mean.
