Black lace mandala tattoo on hip and thigh

Dotwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A large black ink design resembling lace, with scalloped borders, a central radial mandala and a pendant-like drop, spans the hip and upper thigh. Fine linework fills the lace pattern, while dotted lines fade down the thigh and add a shaded, dripping effect. The ink is entirely black and grey, and the design is framed by bare skin and white bedding.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ada had been pricking the pattern for three evenings before she noticed the holes were drifting. The parchment lay on the pillow under the lamp, pins standing in their rows like a choir waiting for a note, and the bobbins hung off the edge in pairs, forty-eight of them, each trailing its small tail of linen thread. Her mother had drawn the pattern in 1964 for a Honiton collar that never got finished, and the paper had gone soft at the folds the way old hymn sheets do.

You start at the centre, her mother used to say, and you let the rest decide where it wants to go. So Ada began with the boss, a small hard sun of eight spokes, and worked outward, twisting pairs, crossing them, setting a pin each time the ground net closed round a motif. The scallops came next, a row of loops that had to meet exactly where the radial lines ended. At the eleventh scallop her hand had taken a pair one turn too far, and the whole curve bellied out like a sail. She could unpick it. Instead she sat back, looked at the bulge, and saw a pendant hanging from the lace.

By dawn the bulge had become a drop, and she left its thread ends long so they would fall past the edge of the work in fine dotted lines, like rain caught in a lamp. Her mother, who had not held a bobbin in six years, had once told her that lace was only holes arranged with care. Ada tied off the last pair, lifted the piece from the pillow with two pins, and carried it across the room to the window, where the morning came through the net and made the pattern look like frost.
