Black and grey rose on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A large rose with bold outlines and leaves wraps across the forearm, with the bloom at the centre and foliage trailing to the upper left. The petals use open linework with stippled dotwork shading, creating soft grey gradients and strong dark accents. The plain white fabric and blurred dark background keep the focus on the tattoo.

The lock at Hythe Cut has been stuck since Tuesday, and you are the one who has to stand on the beam in the drizzle and haul the paddle with your father's old windlass while the Marigold drifts sideways toward the reeds. Your brother shouts from the stern that you are doing it wrong. You are not doing it wrong. You are doing it the way Mam did, with your hip against the iron and your eyes on the water.

Once the gates groan open you step back aboard and wipe your palms on your trousers. Down in the cabin the stove has gone out. Pressed into the lid of the coal box, scorched there by someone's thumb years ago, is the rose Mam drew with a hot poker and a steady hand: the bloom at the centre, petals opened like cupped fingers, the leaves trailing off towards the hinge. She told you it was a map of the Trent, which made no sense, and then she laughed and said a barge needed something pretty to look at while it was going nowhere.

You light the stove with the last of the kindling and sit on the bench while the kettle ticks. The tiller is yours now, and the lock keys, and the logbook with its neat columns of tonnage and dates in her hand. On the back page she has drawn the rose again, smaller, dotted all over with tiny pricks of pencil so the grey seems to rise through the paper like breath on glass.

You close the book and lift the kettle. The rose on the coal box is the only thing in the cabin that has not moved, and in the steam it looks almost as if it is opening.
