Black line serpentine dragon design
Black and grey · Flash
A bold black outline drawing of a long, serpentine dragon with a curled tail on the left and a spiked head with wing-like fins on the right. A jagged ridge runs along the back and small clawed legs are visible on the underside. The design uses solid black linework with no shading or colour, set on a plain white background.

The wind off the Humber had got under the canvas again, and Ada Pennock was up a ladder with a tin of black gloss and a brush gone stiff at the tip, trying to finish the dragon on the side of the Serpent Caravan before the showman came back from the bookies. Its tail curled round the window frame like a question. Its head reared at the far end, fins up like a sail, and the jagged ridge down its back had been the hardest part, because the old lettering kept showing through.

Her grandfather had painted it first, in 1952, when the fair still ran on coal and nobody asked about insurance. He had told her the beast was called Mags, after a woman in Hull who once beat a bare-knuckle man in a booth. Ada didn't believe that. But she believed the legs. Two small clawed feet pressed low against the boards, as if the creature was walking the caravan along the ground like a bead on a string, and she had never once managed to get them right without a steady hand.
Dusk came. The generator coughed. Ada stopped worrying about the showman and started listening to the fair: the rattle of the dodgems, a child arguing about candyfloss, the carousel organ wheezing through its one good tune. She worked the fins out slowly, one stroke at a time, until the last line met the edge of the panel and the whole thing read as one unbroken movement from tail to snout.
When she climbed down her hands were black to the wrist. Across the field the showman was shouting her name, and she didn't turn round. She looked at the dragon instead, coiled and finished, and for the first time that season it seemed to be the caravan that was following it, not the other way about.
