Teacup with steam, heart handle and butterfly

Black and grey · Flash

A stylised black drawing of a teacup on a saucer, with long curling strokes rising as steam from the cup. The handle forms a heart shape, and a small solid butterfly sits on the saucer. The bold, flowing linework is shown on a plain white background with no shading or colour.

The kettle had been going since five, and by the time the frost left the yard gate I had poured three cups I would not drink. Dad's was the brown mug with the hairline crack. Mine was the thin white cup Gran brought from Carlisle the year she married, the one with the heart for a handle that never sat right on any saucer in the house. I carried it out to the milking shed anyway, steam curling off it like something trying to get out.

The heifer in pen four had been straining since midnight. Dad said she'd manage without us, and I reminded him he'd said the same about the ewe in February, and he didn't argue. We leaned on the rail and watched our breath go up with the steam from the cows. He turned his mug in his big hands, looking for a place to set it down, and I told him the saucer was still on the kitchen table where I'd left it, the one with the little black butterfly Gran dabbed on as a joke the year the wasps got into the jam.

The calf came feet first at a quarter to seven, slick and steaming in the blue light, and Dad laughed in a way I hadn't heard since the autumn sales. We stood there while the heifer licked it dry and started low and complaining, the way they do once they've decided they're mothers. My tea had gone cold. I drank it anyway, holding the cup by the heart so my thumb never touched the chip.

Back in the kitchen the saucer was exactly where I'd left it, the butterfly facing the window as if it had been waiting for the frost to lift too.
