Black mandala and scarab sleeve on forearms
Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Four forearms are shown side by side, covered in a dense sleeve of mandala and star patterns, with a scarab beetle at the centre of the inner arms and bands of solid black running across the elbows and wrists. The work uses fine dotwork stippling for shading and clean, precise linework for the geometric motifs, all in black ink and grey tones. The dark background makes the design stand out, and the hands rest at the bottom of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The widow Hesketh wanted her hall floored by midsummer, and she wanted it to show the sky as it stood over the fishing village the night her husband drowned. Ada Coyle had set four hundred tiles that spring, each no bigger than a thumbnail, and each one a dot of black stone. She worked by lamplight with a bradawl and a tin of pitch, pricking the same pattern into the grout until her fingertips felt like sandpaper.

The trouble was the beetle. Every night the design moved. A stone scarab appeared at the centre of the sunburst, its legs folded as if it had been dropped there, and by morning it had crept a finger's width towards the door. Ada laid it again. By the fourth week the lines of the star had bent around its wings like a tide around a rock, and the chevron bands that were meant to hold the room together ran off at angles no rule could follow.
On the last night she sat up with the tiles and the lamp and watched. The beetle rolled. It was only a tile, she told herself, but she saw it take a slow path across the flags, pushing a small grey dust before it, down the length of the hall and out under the door towards the water. Where it stopped, the mandala closed like an eye.
In the morning the widow stood in her doorway and looked down at the floor for a long time. Then she asked Ada to leave the beetle exactly where it was, and to take her wages in salt and bread. Ada never found out what the beetle had been pushing. She only knew the sea had gone quiet, and that the star over the harbour had, at last, stopped moving.
