Mandala and lotus tattoo on the thigh
Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A symmetrical mandala design sits centrally on the upper thigh, with a lotus at the top, layered petal shapes, and a shaded central bloom. Fine single-line detailing forms the outer scrollwork and hanging chains, while stippled dotwork builds soft shading in the centre. The image is in black ink and greys and is framed closely on the leg against a plain light background.

Sit closer, the brass is still warm from my hands. My grandfather taught me that a lamp is a lotus that has agreed to hold a flame. You begin at the centre with the finest punch, a needle of steel, and you press dots, thousands of them, until the bloom goes soft as cloth in the shade. Nobody hurries a dot. Hurry it and the metal remembers.

The Haddad girl came up the lane in August with her bride-price knotted in a handkerchief and a drawing torn from a ledger. She wanted the outer petals drawn with a single line, the pen never lifted, and the chains beneath them dropping like tears from a sill. I told her a line is only as honest as the hand that keeps it. She laughed and said her hand had never once been honest. We worked eleven nights by the same oil lamp, and she learned to breathe slowly enough that her dots stopped wobbling.
On the last night the chains were finished. She lifted the lamp and held it to the whitewash, and the shadow of the lotus spread across the wall in layers, each petal a shade darker than the one before. The little teardrops at the foot of every chain swung and caught the light. She said nothing for a long time. Then she asked me to put the lamp out, so she could see where it had been.
I did. In the dark the teardrops still hung there, dark on dark, and she counted them one by one with her finger, the way you count coins you already know are all there.
