Black mandala on the back of a hand
Geometric · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand rests on dark asphalt with grey matte stiletto nails and many silver rings, including lotus, flower, elephant and om designs. A black mandala with dotted and scalloped rings sits on the back of the hand and wrist, and it may be henna or a temporary design rather than an ink tattoo. The ink is solid black with no greys, and the composition is a top-down shot with black boots and a black sleeve at the edges.

Dear Ilse,

The Tarrow Guild has finally paid me for the nine rings, though not in coin. The harbourmaster's clerk brought a sack of grey river pearls and a note saying the mandala was to go on the back of the hand in ink, not silver, because silver only tells people what you own and ink tells them where you have been. I did not argue. I have spent three nights drawing the scallops with a reed pen and a pot of lamp black, counting dots the way Mother taught us to count stitches.
The lotus ring is the hardest. It has to sit on the second knuckle so that when the hand closes, the petals fold over the ink and look like a second bloom. I cut the elephant no bigger than a barleycorn and turned its trunk toward the little finger, because the clerk said the old wives in Carrow believe an elephant walks backwards from danger. The om I stamped inside a ring of seven dots, seven being the number of bridges in our city.
Yesterday the maid came to the workshop to collect them and asked me to explain each piece. I told her the truth, that I made every one by lamplight and never saw a finished hand. She laughed and said that was the best way to make jewellery, since the hand would tell me what it wanted.
I think of that now, shaping the last flower. Come home at the thaw. I will leave the lamp lit.
Love, Maren
