The lotus came up on Tuesday, one pale cup pushing through the brown water as if it had been waiting all winter for permission. Mr Ashby came to see it with his cap in his hands and said nothing for a full minute, which from him is a sonnet.

I have been laying out the new bed by the south wall the way Grandmother drew it, a ring of box inside a ring of thyme, with the sundial at the centre. She never finished the drawing. I found it folded inside her seed catalogue, the lines so fine I had to hold it to the window. Where her pencil stopped, I have been guessing, and the guesses keep coming out as little dots, one every hand's width, running from the gate to the pond like a path somebody meant to follow.

Yesterday I found the packet she must have meant for the centre. Its paper had gone soft and grey, and inside were a dozen tiny black seeds, each no bigger than a pinhead. I pressed one into the soil at the very middle, then sat back on my heels and waited, because nothing about it looked like it would ever grow.

Come home at Michaelmas. I will show you the dots, the lotus and the ring. I think she knew exactly what she was doing, and I think she was leaving us a map. Love, Hen
