Black mandala tattoo on head and neck
Blackwork · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
The image shows the side of a man's head and neck, with a large black and grey mandala design of flower and leaf motifs extending from behind the ear down onto the neck. The linework is bold and the fills use dense dotwork stippling and solid black areas. The plain pale background keeps the focus on the tattoo, and a black ear plug is visible in the ear.

Marta Evesham had counted the dots on the harbour wall for thirty-one years, and every spring the number changed. She kept the tally in a green ledger at the chandlery counter, between the tide tables and the price of tarred rope. Sixteen hundred and four last March. Sixteen hundred and nine by April, when the gulls had nested on the north pier and someone had scrubbed the barnacles off the bollards with a wire brush.

Her father had taught her that a mandala was a map of the inside of a thing, and that the sunflowers painted on the fishing boats were the only honest flowers in Pellan Cove because they turned to follow whatever light was going. She believed him until the summer the ferry stopped calling. After that she sat on the quay each evening with a pen and squared paper, drawing rings of petals around a centre she never finished, because the centre kept moving.
In August a stranger came off the last boat with a sailcloth bag and a face like weathered rope, asking for the chandlery. He wanted a brass compass repaired and nothing else. Marta fixed it in twenty minutes, set the needle true, and noticed he had stopped to look at the sunflower stencil above her door as if it owed him money.
"It has been turning the wrong way since the spring," he said. "Tell me where you keep the sun." She took down the ledger, opened it to the page of dots, and pointed at the one she had never counted. He laughed, paid in coins, and walked up the hill without looking back. The next morning the sunflowers on every boat in the harbour faced the water, and Marta's count stood at one more than it had.
