Mandala tattoo across neck and upper back
Dotwork · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A woman with her hair in a loose bun is shown from behind, with a large mandala design across the back of her neck and down onto her upper back. The design uses dense dotwork shading and fine radiating linework to build layered floral and geometric rosettes, tapering into a central line ending in a diamond shape. The tattoo is entirely black and grey, with soft gradients that give depth to the lighter areas of the pattern.

Sit closer, you lot, and mind the step, for this stair has eaten better men than any of you. Now the old keep at Harrowmere had a roof no roof since has matched. Lord Aldous wanted a ceiling like the sky seen through a spider's web, so he sent for a mason called Tobiah Frane, who had never built anything grander than pig sties.

Frane worked through a whole winter with dividers and a bag of chalk. Each morning he drew one rosette over another, petal inside petal, until the chapel ceiling bloomed like frost on a pane. The lord paid him in silver, then grumbled that the sum was short and asked where the rest had gone. Frane said the answer hung from a cord, and he would show him at Candlemas.
At Candlemas he lowered a plumb line from the broken eastern window, tarred hemp with a lead diamond tied at its end. It fell the length of the nave and stopped a finger's width above the flagstones, dead centre beneath the great rose. Lord Aldous tipped back his head and saw that every petal had been set true to that line, so the whole pattern hung from it like a bell from its rope.
They say the lord climbed the tower that night to find the mason and found only bare stone, cold and open to the stars. The lead diamond still hangs in the nave, though the rope rotted long ago. Mind your head under the arch, and if the wind comes through, listen for a man counting petals in the dark.
