Small cross tattoo inside the ear

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A small black cross sits on the inner part of an ear, with dark hair falling around the side of the head. The cross is drawn in thin, even black linework with no shading. The plain background and close framing keep the tattoo as the clear focus.

Harriet had been pacing the flood bank since six, and the tide was already turning against her chain. "Hold it steady, Dennis," she called, though the boy at the far staff could hardly hear her over the wind coming off the Wash. He lifted the rod an inch and let it drop again, grinning at the cold.

They were fixing the height of a village that did not yet know it was sinking. Each brass bench mark had to be set with a fine cross scratched into stone, the exact point where the level line met the world, and she had been cutting them with a steel nib and a jeweller's loupe since the spring. The church of St Botolph had a good flat plinth on its north corner. She knelt in the wet grass and drew the first arm of the cross, then the second, keeping the lines thin and even so nobody would argue with them later.

Dennis came round with two mugs of tea that tasted of tin. "Vicar says the bell ringers want to know if you're measuring for a new steeple."

"Tell him I'm measuring for the water," she said. "The steeple's the last thing I'll touch." She sighted through the instrument one more time. The reading was true to a sixteenth. Somewhere under the fields, seventeen miles off, another crew would be doing the same thing with the same cross, and if every one of them held the line the sea would have to wait its turn. She wrote the figure in her notebook, closed it, and pressed her palm flat against the cold stone.
