Black mandala tattoo on the back
Dotwork · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A circular mandala of layered petals sits at the centre of the frame on pale skin. The design uses fine black linework, with dense dotwork stippling filling the darker petal rings and open white petals in the centre. The tattoo is centred on the frame against a plain background, with a strip of clothing visible at the top edge.

The water tanker had been stuck at the crossroads for three days when Ines finally walked out to it with a tin of tea and a pencil. The driver, Osei, had stopped talking after the second day, and he was asleep with his hat tipped over his face. Around the old well the dust had settled into rings, the way spilt flour settles around a bowl, and Ines could not stop looking at them.

She sat on the tailgate and started drawing on the back of a fuel receipt. She began with the outer ring, eight scalloped petals pressed into the grit as if someone had stamped them there, the way her grandmother had taught her to start a lace collar. Then she worked inward. The second ring she filled with tiny dots, dense where the shade of the rocks lay, sparse where the sun had burned everything pale. Each ring took her longer than the one before, and by the time she reached the centre her hand ached and the tea had gone cold.
When she held the receipt up, Osei was watching her from under his hat. He had not moved, but his eyes had sharpened. He said the rings were not decoration. The well had been dug by his grandfather's crew, and every rain since had pushed its water outward through the sand in the same slow petals, so the ground remembered the shape of what it held. He took the paper, folded it once, and tucked it into his shirt pocket without looking at it again.
The tanker pulled away at dawn. By noon the wind had begun to soften the rings at their edges, but the white centre stayed sharp where the well's lip caught the light, and Ines walked back toward the village with the pencil warm in her palm.
