Sunflower mandala across upper back
Dotwork · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A large sunflower design fills the upper back, with a densely stippled dotwork centre surrounded by layered petals filled with fine patterns. The shading is black and grey, with crisp linework and curling tendrils extending to the left and right of the flower. The photo is taken from behind against a carved wooden background, with the tattoo centred in the frame.

You learned to count the seeds on Skerrow the summer your grandmother's hands went stiff and she could no longer hold the pin. The old sunflower head by the chapel wall had gone grey and heavy, and she sent you out with a cup of tea and a bent needle, telling you to mind the spirals. Left spun one way, right spun the other, thirty-four one way and fifty-five the other, she said, and if you got a number wrong the whole head would sulk.

Each morning you sat on the low wall while the gulls quarrelled over the fish boats and tallied. The petals around the edge were the hardest, layered like the lace she had once pinned along the kitchen shelves, each one stitched with tiny curls and teardrops that the wind kept trying to lift. You drew them in a notebook with a pencil worn to a stub, dot by dot, until the page looked like the face of a clock that had forgotten the time.
On the last morning of August the head turned. It had followed the sun for weeks, and now it faced the water, and the seeds at its middle caught the light in a pale ring like a lamp left burning. You counted it one final time and got her numbers exactly, no sulk. When you carried the notebook up the hill she was sitting in the doorway with her hands in her lap, and she didn't ask for the figures. She only wanted to know whether it had turned towards the sea.
