Colourful mandala on upper back
Geometric · Back · Colour · Photo
A large mandala of layered petals sits centrally on the upper back, with a ring of blue and orange scalloped petals, pink and purple inner petals and green leaf accents. Fine black linework and small dotted accents define the shapes, with a detailed pink and green flower motif at the centre. A partly visible black and grey hamsa hand tattoo sits lower left in the frame.

When Mum finally unrolled it on the back-room lino, the centre was a pink flower with six rings of petals, each stitched in thread the colour of boiled sweets. Green leaves ran between the scallops as if someone had counted them against a clock face. Blue and orange wheels sat round the rim, dotted with white, the way the biscuit tin looked when the afternoon sun came through the window and hit it.
Mum wanted it cut down to fit under the telly. Rukhsana had always said you do not cut a circle, because a circle never forgives you for it. So we rolled it back up, tied it with the orange cord from the Christmas parcels, and carried it to the number 12 on Lumb Lane. Mum sat on it like a bench the whole way, arguing with the driver about whether a rug counts as luggage.
At the top of the hill she stood, brushed the fringe flat with both hands and said, that's how you know a thing is finished. You stop when it looks like it could go on forever, and then you hand the needle to someone younger.
