Black mandala tattoo on upper back
Geometric · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A woman lies face down on a bed, photographed from behind, with her hair tied in a loose bun and a white bikini top. A large, symmetrical black mandala sits between her shoulder blades, built from radiating petal shapes, scalloped rings and a small central rosette. The design is rendered in solid black ink against tanned skin, with the pale bedding and carpet filling the background.

The last stone was the one that would not fit. Brannoch Dyke had cut the rose window for the chapel at Carrick Hold the summer his wife died, and every petal he set into the arch came out a finger's width short of the next. The lord's steward said the window must be finished before the frost, or the chapel would stand roofless for another hundred years.

His daughter Ailsa, who was nine and had no fear of scaffolding, sat on the sill with a pot of lamp black and drew the window on the flagstones of the nave. She drew it from the centre out: a small round rosette first, then rings of scalloped leaves, then long petals reaching outward like the spokes of a cartwheel. When the rain came she drew it again each morning, and each morning the lines had softened in the damp, but the shape was the same.
On the last evening her father knelt beside her drawing and saw what she had done. Every petal she had made was exactly as long as the one across from it. He had been measuring stones against the arch with a cord and a bad temper, and the answer had been on the floor the whole time, made by a child who had only ever looked down.
He cut the final petal to her drawing, not to the arch. It sat in the gap with a sound like a shut hand. Ailsa's floor drawing washed away with the first snow, but the window held, and the steward, who had come to complain, stayed on his knees under it until the bell rang for vespers.
