Ornate mandala tattoo down the upper back

Geometric · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A person is seen from behind with hair tied up in a loose bun, showing a symmetrical black ornamental tattoo down the centre of the upper back. The design stacks a circular mandala motif with scrolling filigree, dotted detail and a lower rosette-like panel. The image is in black ink only, set against warm skin and a white bathroom tile background, with a lace top draped over the shoulders.

Dear Tomas,

The pass closed on Tuesday and it has not opened since, so you will have to take my word that the snow has reached the first-floor sills. Father has spent three days on the stair scraping rime from the hall lantern. You remember it, the brass one with the pierced shade that Mother bought at the Lindqvist sale. When the lamp is lit, the light comes through the filigree in a ring of small suns, and the rosette in its base throws a star across the flagstones. Father says it is the only thing in the house that was never cheap.

Last night the guests were two surveyors from the railway and a widow who would not give her name. They sat beneath the lamp and copied the pattern onto the back of the bill of fare. The surveyor with the moustache claimed the rings were made from a single circle folded over itself forty times, and that a man could lose a week hunting for the first line. The widow said nothing. She traced the rosette with one finger, slowly, from the centre outward, and when she reached the rim she began again from the middle.

I have decided not to tell Father that she left the bill of fare behind. It is on the sideboard now, with the lamp drawn on one side and, on the other, a sum that comes out wrong in the same place every time. I checked it twice. Perhaps you will know what she was counting.

Write soon, if the post can get through. Your loving sister, Ingrid
