Henna mandala on upper back
Geometric · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A woman seen from behind has a large, symmetrical mandala design across her upper back, built from layered petals, swirls and scrolling lines. The design is drawn in dark brown-black ink with fine, even linework and no shading, and the henna-style hand design is also visible. The plain skin tone and green ivy wall behind her keep the focus on the design.

Dear Ruth,

The fair pulled out of Dartford before dawn, and I am writing this on the back of a feed sack in the caravan with the kettle ticking as it cools. You will laugh, but the henna stall took more than the rides did this month. Nobody wants a rose on the wrist any more. They want the circle, the one with the petals folded inward like a clock face opening, and they want it across the shoulders where they cannot see it themselves.
Yesterday a girl from the Cornish stalls asked me to do a big one before the Saturday show. I had a cone of paste from the Leicester supplier that had gone grainy, so I mixed it again with lemon and sugar, the way Mam taught us, and left it to rest while I sketched with a biro. I always start at the centre, a small flower with five points, then build outward. Each ring needs the same count of scrolls or it looks lopsided under the lights, and the lights at the fair are cruel.
She kept still for nearly two hours. Halfway through, the generator cut out and we sat in the dark with only the wagon lamp, and she asked me what the pattern was called. I said I had always just called it a mandala, a word a man from Pune taught me. She said it sounded like a sneeze. We laughed until the lamp flickered back on and I could finish the last swirl.
Hold on to the photograph for me. When it fades, which it will in three weeks, I want it kept for the book. I think it is the best thing I have ever drawn, and it was drawn by a stranger in the dark.
Love, Nell
