Black orchids with swirling linework on the ribs

Botanical · Ribs · Mixed · Photo

The design shows several orchids, with solid black blooms and paler, translucent pink petals, linked by long, sweeping black swirls. The petals are shaded with soft gradients, while the flowing outlines are bold and continuous. The composition runs diagonally down the side of the body, with the swirls framing the flowers.

The orchids came up through the beech mast the spring the mill burned, and nobody in Aldcombe would say who had planted them. Old Mercy Tull, who sold eggs at the lych gate, said the wood grew what it was asked for and charged for it in the same coin, so you were wise to ask small.

Wil Harrow was nine when his sister Nan went into the trees after the goats and did not come out. His father walked the hedges for three days. On the fourth morning Wil took the bread knife and a ball of good twine and went in alone. He followed a curl of bracken that bent back on itself like a pen stroke until the path opened on a clearing where orchids leaned out from the roots of an oak. Some were pale as pressed rose, their petals thin enough to show the light. Others were black as wet coal, and when he came near them they breathed a cold sweetness.

He asked for Nan. The pale blooms nodded, but the black ones did not, so he understood that someone would pay. He cut one black flower and tied it to the oak with the twine, which was all his mother had taught him about a fair trade.

Nan came up the path at dusk with a goat on a rope and no memory of the three days, and she said she had only been asleep in the bracken. The next morning a single pink petal lay on the doorstep, thin as a moth's wing, and a streak of white had come into Wil's hair above one temple. Mercy Tull said that was a fair price. Wil said nothing, and kept the twine.
