I know you said the cherry in the car park would never take, that the council cuts everything back to stumps every spring. Well, I went down with the secateurs on Tuesday and took a branch from the bin store side, where nobody looks, and I've put it in a jam jar on the sill of flat 14. It has four flowers open already and three fat buds at the tips, and the petals keep coming loose and landing on the radiator like someone has been sending us confetti.

The lift was out again, so I climbed the fourteen floors with the jar wrapped in a tea towel. Mr Adebayo from 9 passed me on the stairs and asked what I was carrying. I told him I was carrying the spring up to the top of the block, and he laughed so hard he had to sit down on the landing. He says the old tree came down in the winter storm, the one the first residents planted when the place went up in 1968. Nobody had told the new people about it.

Anyway. The stem is grey-black where the bark is peeling and the leaves are still a bit curled, but I think it wants the light. It has been leaning towards the window all week, the way you lean towards someone who is about to say something kind. Tell me if I'm being daft. Tell me you'll come up on Sunday and see for yourself.
