Black outline circle tattoo on a shoulder
Geometric · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A woman with a short dark bob holds a lit cigarette to her lips, with only her mouth and chin in frame. A single thick black outline of a circle sits on the upper shoulder, with a clean, even line and an empty centre. The image is monochrome with soft grey tones, and the bare skin and upper chest are lit softly against a plain background.

You are nine years old when Kallias sets the wheel turning in the yard behind his shop in the Kerameikos and tells you the first thing a potter learns is not how to throw clay but how to leave something out. He presses a bronze compass into the wet slab on the bench and turns it once, slowly, so the groove it cuts is so even that the water pooled in it does not tremble.

The days that follow are all buckets. You carry grey slip up from the well, trim the feet of bowls until your thumbs go white, and sweep the kiln mouth until your palms blister and split. Kallias never praises a rim. He only taps the centre of each finished plate with one knuckle and listens. A true plate rings like a bell. A flawed one thuds, and he drops it into the cistern without a word.
In the autumn the oil merchant's widow brings a polished mirror of bronze and asks for a lid to match it. You work three nights by the lamp, cutting the rim clean and leaving the middle open, just as he taught you. When you finally set it on the bench, Kallias holds it up to the flame and turns it over and over. The lamp gutters twice before he speaks.
"You have not filled the centre," he says, and you feel your stomach drop. Then he takes his stylus and sets the point to the bronze exactly where the circle is empty. "Good. Leave it. That is where the light goes."
