A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Brother Anselm had been ruling the same line for nine days when the abbot came down to the scriptorium and stood behind him without speaking. The line was meant to run level across the vellum, below the last row of letters and above the margin where the gloss would sit. It kept rising at the far end, a hair at a time, and no amount of care with the bone point would stop it.

'You are holding that pen as if it owes you money,' the abbot said at last.

Anselm did not look up. 'The ruling is true at this end and false at the other. The sheet is not flat. Nothing in this house is flat.'

The abbot took a length of waxed thread from the spool hanging by the window. He wet it in the ink pot, pulled it taut between two pins, and lifted it clean. The line it left was black and perfect, finer than any pen could manage. 'My mother's people in the fen villages do it this way,' he said. 'You do not measure the ground. You let the thread show you where the water wants to lie.'

They carried the cord out to the cloister garth that evening, where the old well had sunk a hand's width into the mud. The water stood at exactly the height of the thread. Anselm looked at it for a long time, then went back inside and ruled nothing at all. He let the cord hang over the desk and wrote every line beneath it, one after another, and the letters sat on the page as if they had been poured there.
