Dark symbol tattoo on the back of the neck
Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A small, dark, script-like symbol sits on the back of the neck, shown from behind with the face turned away from the camera. The strokes look smooth and fairly even, and the image is a warm sepia tone, so the ink reads as black against the skin. The composition is tight, with the raised hand and short dark hair framing the tattoo at the centre.

The keeper's widow would not let the boats go out until the glass had been wiped and the old lamp lit, and she would not light it until she had drawn the mark on the sill with a stub of chalk. Nobody in Scarrow Bay could read it. It curled like a wave turning back on itself, with a loop at the top and a tail that trailed down like a length of rope.

Her son Tobiah, who was eleven and clever with his hands, asked what it meant. She said it meant the light was listening. He asked to whom. She said to the men out past the Teeth, who had no other way to find the harbour in fog. He thought this was nonsense and said so, and she gave him a clout across the ear, then later a bowl of mussels, which was how she apologised.
The autumn the fog came in and stayed nine days, Tobiah climbed the tower alone with a pot of lamp black and a brush made from the tail of a cat. He drew the mark on the inside of the glass, where no one would see it. On the tenth morning the fog lifted and three boats came in on the tide with their nets full and their lamps still burning, though it was broad daylight, and every man aboard swore he had heard a bell that was not there.
His mother never asked what he had done. She ran her thumb along the sill, where the chalk had worn away, and said the sea was a difficult reader, and that a boy who wanted to be understood had better learn to write clearly. Tobiah took the hint and practised on his slate until his hand could make a single stroke without wobbling.
