Black panther among lilies design

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

The drawing shows a black panther climbing up through a cluster of lily blooms, with its tail trailing down the lower part of the composition. Thin outlines and solid black fill define the cat, while the flowers and stems are rendered in fine line with light grey shading on the petals. The design is drawn in black and grey on a pale background, with the subject arranged in a tall, narrow vertical form.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The bulb lorry from Rotterdam had been waved through the barrier for three winters, so when its manifest came up one crate short, you almost let it pass. You lifted the lid with the end of your biro and found the cat before the flowers: a black animal climbing up through a tangle of Madonna lilies, its tail hanging down past the stems like a dropped rope. Its eyes were pale and unbothered. The driver, a broad man called Piet with a flask wedged between his knees, did not look surprised at all.

"She rides every crossing," he said. "Came aboard in Rotterdam, sat on the top bloom like it was a throne. I stopped asking years ago."

You checked the pet forms out of habit. Nothing. You checked the manifest again, where someone had written lilies over tulips in a hand that pressed hard enough to tear the paper. The cat stepped onto the lip of the crate, stretched one forelimb towards the Pyrenean light, and looked at you as if you were the one who needed to explain yourself.

In the end you stamped it through: one load, flowers, no animals declared. The barrier arm rose with its slow complaint. When you turned back to your booth, a lily petal had drifted onto the blotter, and a streak of yellow pollen was on your sleeve that no amount of washing would shift. For a week you found it everywhere. Every morning the lorry came up the hill, Piet grinned and held up two fingers, and the crate lid was already open an inch.
