Hatched ink arrow design with feathered fletching
Black and grey · Flash
A vertical pen drawing of an arrow with a large feathered fletching at the top, a twisted shaft wrapped with thorny vine detail, and a small feather near the ornate collar above a faceted arrowhead. The linework uses dense hatching and cross-hatching on the feathers and shaft, with solid black fills on the arrowhead. The design is rendered in black ink only on a plain off-white background, centred and filling most of the frame's height.

Mother had me fletching the last six arrows of the season when the bowyer's boy came up the lane with a face like thunder. "Lord Ashby's huntsman wants them by noon," he said, and dropped a bundle of blackthorn cuttings on the bench. "Bind the thorns outward, he says. Nobody brings down a stag from the ridge without the thorns."

I had never seen blackthorn bound onto ash before. The spines were as long as a fingernail and snagged the wool of my apron as I worked, so I wound each turn slowly and close, the way my grandfather taught me to coax a bent sapling straight. The fletching came from a grey goose that had died on the mill pond. I split every feather with my thumbnail and pinned it with pitch, three to a shaft, until the arrows looked less made than grown out of the hedge.
Near the collar I tucked one small feather I had kept from my brother's last pheasant, the morning he walked over the ridge and did not come back. Nobody asked me to put it there. I bound it beneath the brass ferrule and the faceted head, a little crooked, and said nothing.
The huntsman took five without looking at them, paid in silver, and rode out before the mist lifted. The sixth I kept back, because the feather was still wet and I had not finished the binding. By dusk the rack held one arrow with its point towards the door, and I left it there, thorns to the wall, waiting for someone to come up the ridge road and tell me which way the wind had gone.
