Black rose on a forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A solid black rose with bold outlines sits on the inner forearm, with a stem, striped leaves and small thorns extending downward. The linework is clean and heavy, with the petals filled in solid black and only thin white gaps left to suggest their folds. The design is centred on a plain skin background, with a dark fabric surface behind the arm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Edith found the bloom on the third morning after the wasps got into the windfalls. It sat alone at the top of the old wall, where nothing had been planted since her husband died, and its petals had gone the colour of a bruised plum before turning black, the kind of black that swallowed the light instead of catching it. Ridley from the next orchard stood at the gap in the hedge with his hands in his pockets and said he had never seen a rose do that.

"Nor me," she said, though she had. Tom had grafted that stock forty years ago from a cutting a travelling man sold him for a shilling and a bottle of perry, and he swore it would never bloom true. Every summer it put out canes with thorns the length of a thumbnail and leaves with teeth to them, and every autumn he cut it back and grumbled. Ridley asked if he could take a cutting. Edith told him the thorns would have his fingers, and he could take his chances.

They worked along the wall with secateurs while the light went long and gold over the Discovery trees. Ridley cut a length of stem below the bloom and wrapped it in a damp cloth, and the thorns caught in the cloth like small hooks. Edith watched his hands and thought of Tom's, which had been scratched the same way for as long as she had known them.

When she got home she stood the stem in a jar on the kitchen sill, the black head nodding over the rim. Before the first frost every petal had dropped onto the path in a neat ring, and she swept them into a tin and left it open for the bees.
