Outline rose on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A rose in bold black outline, with its petals drawn as curved layers and a spiral centre, sits with three serrated leaves on the outer forearm. The design uses uniform linework with no shading, and the leaves are detailed with fine vein lines. The photograph is taken at an angle against a black and white checkered floor, and the design fills most of the frame.

Dear Tom,

The 17:42 was late again, so I've got ten minutes before the platform fills up and I can't hear myself think. Something odd happened at the counter this morning. A man in a grey coat bought a single stem from the bucket by the till, and when I wrapped it in brown paper he asked if I could draw him a rose instead, because he'd lost the sketch he'd promised his daughter. I said I'd never drawn anything in my life except the prices on the chalkboard. He laughed and left a pencil on the counter anyway.
So I did it on the back of a delay notice, using the bold line Dad always used on the platform signs. Petals first, one curling over the next, then a tight little spiral in the middle like a watch spring. Three leaves, each with fine veins fanning out from the stalk. It took about as long as a kettle takes to boil. When I held it up he didn't say anything for a while. He just folded it and tucked it inside his coat, the way you'd keep a ticket you meant to use again.
I keep thinking about that line. Nobody draws a rose in one unbroken outline unless they're sure of where it's going. Dad was sure. You were sure too, once, before you took the job in Leeds.
Come home at Christmas. The bucket's still full of stems and I've got a pencil behind my ear.
Love, Jo
