Black trees dissolving into green shards on back
Geometric · Back · Mixed · Photo
The design shows a cluster of black silhouetted trees on the left, with dense, textured trunks and rounded canopies. To the right, the trees break apart into flat green triangles and small dark cubes that scatter outwards across the skin. The black ink uses bold solid shapes and dry, broken strokes, while the green is flat and bright, and the piece covers most of the person's back.

Day nine on the Ashdown ridge and the pines are still standing where the maps say they should be, which is more than I can say for my compass. Halvard swears the needle drifts whenever he mentions his sister, so I have stopped asking him questions and started counting trunks instead. Forty-one from the ridge path to the dry gully. The old survey marked a clean plantation here, rows you could march through. What is actually here is a crowd of rounded crowns thickened by wind, and trunks gone soft with lichen, dark as ink where the rain runs down them.

The strange part begins past the third cairn. The trees stop being trees. Their outer edges split into flat green facets, bright as sea glass, and then into small dark blocks that hang in the air like someone has tipped out a box of dice. I walked into one of these clouds this morning and my sleeve came away speckled with green dust that smelled of cut grass and salt. Halvard laughed until he had to sit down. He says the forest is only shedding, the way a dog sheds, and that we should stop writing it up as a hazard.
I am not writing it up as anything yet. I have drawn it instead, twice, once in graphite and once with the green pencil from the bottom of the tin. Tomorrow I will take a bearing straight through the shards and see whether the far side of them is still pine. If it is, I will come home with a fine map and a bad story. If it is not, I will come home with the same story and nothing to show for it but a green thumbprint on the page.
