Brain in a jar with branches on a thigh
Botanical · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A sketched glass jar holds a brain and a bushy plant, with bare branches spreading up and out around it and three small tooth shapes below. The linework is fine and hatched, with soft shading in the brain and jar, and the jar's shoulder is washed with orange. The tattoo covers the outer thigh and is framed by bare skin.

Brother Anselm kept the jar on the infirmary windowsill, where the winter light came in grey off the fen. Inside it sat a brain the colour of old tallow, pickled in brine and mugwort, because the physician who had owned it asked that it be kept. Nobody in the valley knew what he had thought with it. Anselm watered the plant that grew from the jar's mouth, a sage-grey thing that crept up through the cork, and every spring it threw out more bare twigs than leaves.

The village children came to the wall to ask about the teeth. Three of them had been drawn from the physician's own jaw and hung on threads beneath the shelf, and the children counted them aloud as if they might grow back. Anselm told them the truth, which was that he did not know. He told them the branches were older than the monastery and went where the roots could not follow.
In the third winter a girl named Wenna came up the lane with a fever and a question. She wanted to know whether a mind kept in a jar would remember the road it had walked. Anselm lifted the lid, let the brine breathe, and said it would forget the names first and the roads last. She laughed and said she would rather keep the roads. He broke a pale twig from the plant and gave it to her, and told her to put it in the ground where she first felt at home.
