Bare trees and birds on an upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows tall, leafless trees with dense, finely drawn branches spreading across the upper arm and shoulder, with small birds in flight in the sky above. A small doorway sits at the base of the trees near the elbow side of the arm. The shading is black and grey, with soft tonal gradients in the trunks and branches, and the image shows three views of the same arm.

The bills were still pinned to the feed store in Dereham when the last of the winter stock went into the wood, and nobody had torn them down because nobody had come to see the show in three years. Mrs Ancell's doves were the only act left that paid its keep. Every evening she opened the cage at the back of the wagon and they went up over the trees in a grey rope, turned once above the field, and came down again on her shoulders for the bread.

By November the field had gone to frost and the big top was a sagging brown ghost over the wagons. I was the one who kept the lamps lit and the stove banked, so I was the one who noticed the old door. It stood on its own at the foot of the great beech at the edge of the wood, a plain pine door with a brass knob gone green. When I asked Mrs Ancell about it she only said her husband had built it for the children to hide behind, years before any of us came.
On the last night the doves did not come down. I went out with the bread and the storm lantern and found them roosting in the bare branches, a hundred pale shapes hung along the twigs like washing. The door at the foot of the beech stood open a hand's width, and a warm yellow light spilled across the leaf mould. Inside, Mrs Ancell sat on an upturned crate with her shoes off, scattering crumbs for a sparrow, as though she had been waiting for someone to come and tell her the show was over.
I didn't go in. I set the bread on the step, drew the door closed gently, and walked back across the frost to tell the others the birds had gone home.
