Tribal armband tattoo on upper arm
Geometric · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A solid black armband tattoo wraps fully around the upper arm. It is built from horizontal bands of chevrons, a row of triangles, and a central panel of stylised swirls and curved shapes. The linework is crisp and the black fill is even against the skin, with the plain dark background keeping the focus on the band.

The fleet of Maka Reef had forty boats in the year the sea lay flat for a month and no fish came up on the lines. The old men said the water had forgotten the way home. Pelu, the net-mender's daughter, took her father's bone needle and began to sew a band of black thread around the mast of her uncle's boat, the way her grandmother had marked the first masts, with teeth for the waves and chevrons for paddles pointing forward.

She sewed through the nights. Each row was a boat's name and each tooth a day at sea. When she reached the thirty-ninth tooth, a wind came down from the north, low and steady, and the men took it as a sign the sea remembered them. But the boat called Lark had not come back, and Pelu had left a gap in the swirls at the centre of the band, the width of one hand, for her.
On the fortieth night the Lark came in with her sail torn to ribbons and a line of fish trailing behind her. Her crew had been drifting on a current that bent the stars the wrong way. They had steered by the faint black band on the mast of the boat ahead, lit by the lamp on the shore, and followed it in. Nobody had told Pelu it would work like that.
The next morning she cut the thread from the gap and sewed one last chevron, pointing back toward the beach. The old men still argue about whether the band brought the Lark home or Pelu's stubbornness did. The mast of the Lark still carries it, and nobody has ever managed to unpick it.
