Polynesian-style tribal leg tattoo

Blackwork · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A person sits on steps in white shorts, showing a leg covered in bold black tribal tattoos. A large band of swirls, spirals and triangular shapes runs from the upper thigh down the shin and calf, with a smaller tribal motif on the ankle and foot. The solid black ink and fine grey shading give strong contrast against the skin, and the tattoos are framed by the sunlit steps.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The tide had turned twice before Oriwa finished painting the last spiral on her brother's leg, and still the lines would not sit straight. Her needle was a sharpened albatross bone, her ink soot mixed with turtle oil, and every stroke had to be carried in one breath or the skin would fight it. Nalu watched the sea over her shoulder, counting the fishing canoes coming home past the reef. Only four had returned that week. The fifth was the one with her husband in it, and she had not said his name since the storm.

Oriwa worked the wave pattern up from the ankle, the triangles like teeth along the calf, the long curl that climbed the shin the way the current had dragged the boat toward the gap in the coral. Her grandmother had told her that marks left on a body were a kind of map, and a map could be followed back. So she drew the path home in careful black, one swirl leading into the next, and at the top of the thigh she left a small open spiral, the one place a traveller could step off the line if the sea called them somewhere else.

When the last line was done, Nalu stood up without help and walked to the edge of the steps. The canoe was close enough now to see the lean of its prow and the shape of a man lifting his paddle. He did not wave. He only pointed at the reef, where the water ran dark and then silver, exactly as the spirals had shown. Nalu laughed, and the sound carried over the lagoon, and Oriwa set the bone down in the shell bowl and went to fetch the salt.
