Tribal chest and shoulder tattoo

Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A shirtless, muscular torso shows a large symmetrical tribal design in black ink spreading across the chest and over both shoulders. The linework is bold and solid, with spiral and curved forms meeting at the centre of the chest. The ink is dark against warm skin tones, and the black backdrop focuses attention on the tattoo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mara had carved the same spiral into forty hulls before the old man let her cut one into the keel of the Tern. "Tight at the centre," Oruwa said, tapping the drawing with a knuckle gone stiff from the cold. "The swell turns in on itself out past the shoal, and a boat has to remember that."

The ship had been falling through the dark for two hundred and six years, and nobody aboard had ever seen water. They had the hydroponic tanks, the recycled rain that tasted of copper, and the old charts the council kept sealed in a glass case on the observation deck. Mara had learned the curves from those charts, tracing the eddies of a sea that existed only in the memory of the first crew. Her mother had laid the lines on the inner plating, and her mother's mother before that, so that every generation had turned the same wave a little more sure.

On the night the Tern's lamps flickered, Mara sat with the drawing spread across her knees and understood the pattern was not decoration. It was a map of where the current bent, handed down so that a hand could find its way when the eyes could not. She marked the centre spiral with a fresh stroke, deeper than before.

When the lamps steadied, she went down to the keel with her chisel and cut the turn exactly where her mother had shown her, so the next navigator would feel it under their palm before they ever needed to know why.
