Black tribal feather band on an upper arm

Blackwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A solid black band encircles the arm, with a row of stylised feathers and a pale-outlined column with a curled scroll at its top. The linework is bold and the black fill is dense, with grey shading in the band and feather tips. The image is mostly black ink on skin, with a yellow top, red and blue room background and blue floor in the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Tamsin had been chiselling the same scroll for three days when the gulls started landing on the quay wall in rows, as if someone had sent for them. Her master, old Ruan, said the capital would never sit true unless the curl turned the way the wind turned in March, and she had not yet worked out which way that was.

On the fourth morning a feather lay on the sill of the workshop, grey and barred, longer than her hand. She pressed it flat inside the commissions ledger, and it left a smudge of stone dust across the word Headland. Ruan came in, saw it, and said nothing for a long while. Then he handed her the mallet and told her the column had only been waiting for a feather to tell it which way to fall.

She finished the band of leaves and feathers that week, cutting them shallow so the rain would sit in the grooves and keep them dark. When the column was raised on the headland, pale against the black rock, its scroll curled towards the sea as though it had heard something out there calling its name.

Ruan died the winter after, and the gulls stopped coming to the quay. Tamsin kept the feather in the ledger, and at dusk she sometimes opened the book to find it still holding the page flat, its edges gone soft and gold with age.
