Winged heart on the forearm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a heart outline made from two feathered wings, with the wing feathers drawn in individual scalloped rows and a single long flight feather sweeping out to the right. The linework is dark and the feathers are filled with soft grey shading that gives them depth. The image is a close, slightly angled photo of the inner forearm, with a gold bangle at the wrist and a blurred background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The gull landed on the boarding house wall the morning the piano was sold, and by teatime you had decided it was a sign. Mrs Garnet at number nine said gulls were only hungry. You said hunger doesn't leave a feather on the windowsill, folded so the shaft points at the front door.

The feather was grey, barred at the edges, and as long as your hand. You kept it in the cutlery drawer under the tablecloths, because the drawer was the only dry place in the house, and each night you took it out to see whether it had softened or stiffened. Eleven lodgers had come and gone since August, leaving nothing but damp towels and unpaid bills. Nobody had ever left you anything worth keeping.
In February the sea came over the promenade and the hall lamp failed for three days. Mr Hallam, who had booked the attic room in October, knocked at the kitchen door with a candle and asked whether you had found his wife's letters. He had a face like a tide table and spoke softly, as if the house might overhear. You followed him upstairs, and under the loose board by the skylight lay a shoebox of envelopes, each sealed with a pencilled heart made of two wings.
You read the top one by candlelight. It said only that the room at the top was always theirs if they wanted it. Mr Hallam sat on the bed and didn't cry, and you didn't mention the bill. Afterwards you went back down and set the feather on the windowsill again, shaft to the door, and this time you left the door unlocked.
