Black tribal swirl tattoo on upper arm
Blackwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
The image shows a large solid black tribal design with bold curved blades radiating from a central spiral motif. The linework is thick and the black ink is dense and even, with the design following the curve of the shoulder and upper arm. The background is a white sleeveless top and pale skin, so the black ink contrasts strongly across the frame.

The peel is supposed to come away in one piece, your grandfather says, and you have never managed it, so you keep trying on the windfalls under the Bramley while wasps drink at the split flesh by your boots. His knife is in your hand, the handle worn pale where his thumb used to rest. You turn the apple slowly, keep the blade moving, and the skin lifts in a long ribbon that curls over your fingers and drops into the grass in a tight coil.

Late August has the orchard humming. Ladders lean against the far rows, and somewhere behind the hedge a tractor drags its trailer toward the packing shed. The sun sits low over the hop poles, and the light comes through the leaves in hard bright blades that stripe the windfalls. You pick up another apple, then another, because the first coil looked like a sign and you want to know if it was luck or only the knife.
The third peel comes off clean. You swing it three times around your head, the way the old pickers did, and let it go. It lands on the top of the orchard wall in a neat spiral of red skin, already drying at the edges. You climb up to look at it, and the wasps lift from the cider mess all at once. Back at the house the step is empty and the kettle is cold, but his knife lies open on the sill, and beside it sits his own peel, one unbroken curl gone brown at the tips.
