Tribal swirl piece on shoulder and upper arm
Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A large tribal design covers the shoulder and upper arm, built from bold black spikes, interlocking curves and spiral forms. The linework is solid black with grey shading that gives the raised blades and swirls a dimensional, shadowed look. The photo is taken from the side at close range, with the design filling most of the frame against a plain indoor background.

Dear Nell, the big top went up in Stalybridge on Tuesday and I've not stopped aching since. Mr Oakes has us on the ferris wheel now, bolting the seats back on before every town, and he says the spokes must be checked by hand, every one, because a wheel that turns is only as honest as its worst bolt. I do the spokes on the far side where nobody watches. There's a rhythm to it, spanner and tap, spanner and tap, and the sound carries up over the fairground like a clock nobody bothered to set.

You'll laugh, but I've taken to sketching the swirls the lamps throw on the canvas when the generator dims. They twist like the ropes of the strongman's rigging, or like the curl a wave makes just before it breaks over the pier. Last night I drew them on the back of a handbill, black spikes for the shadows and grey smudges where the light gave out. Mrs Sable saw it over my shoulder and asked if I meant to get it inked. I said I'd sooner ride the wheel backwards.
The fair leaves Saturday for the coast. Mr Oakes says we'll wind up at the harbour where the old boats are hauled out, and I've a notion the swirls will be waiting there, painted on the hulls in faded blue. If they are, I'll stop and look properly. If not, I'll keep the handbill folded in my boot and carry it on until the wheel finally stops with me at the top, looking out. Write back care of the Bell Yard post office. Your loving sister, Ada.
