Black vine and swirl tattoo on an ankle

Botanical · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A black ink tattoo runs from the ankle across the top of the foot, made of looping vines, scrolls, and leaf-like shapes. A small animal silhouette sits inside a circular scroll near the ankle bone, and fine dotted lines add detail along the curves. The tattoo is shown in black ink only against light skin, with the foot photographed close up on a dark surface.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The gardener's daughter was told that the vines of Morrowmere grew only where someone had promised to stay, so she spent her first winter clipping them back from the castle walls. You did not know then that the scrolls on the south gate were older than the throne, or that the small black cat asleep in the coil of the largest one had been carved there by a king who could not keep his word. You only knew the cold had got into your ankles and the bells in the high tower had stopped ringing.

On the feast of thaw the queen's steward came down the hill with a letter sealed in green wax and asked for you by name. He wanted a rope of ivy grown from the old root, long enough to reach the tower window, and he would pay in silver and in a pardon for your father's debts. You took the shears, the twine and a lamp, and you climbed the stair where the dotted lines of frost ran along every step like stitching.

At the top the cat was waiting on the sill, awake now, its tail curled around a leaf of iron. It looked at the ivy, then at you, and yawned. You understood then that the vines had never been grown to climb the tower. They had been grown to hold the stones together, and the queen wanted the last of them cut.

You tied the rope to the bell frame instead and let the ringing begin again.
