Script monogram with flowers and stars on an ankle
Botanical · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A figure-eight style swirl frames a cursive monogram of two letters at the centre, with shaded flower heads on either side and small star shapes and dots scattered around. The linework is clean and dark, with the flowers filled in using grey shading and fine stippling. The design is in black and grey and sits diagonally across the ankle and heel area against a light background.

I scraped the black off with a spoon while the ship lurched past the Horn and the plates chattered in their racks. Through the skylight the stars wheeled over the forecastle, a scatter of them tipped one way and then the other, and every time I looked up I lost my place in the stirring.

The letter in my apron pocket had been folded and unfolded so often the creases had furred. It was from my sister Nell, written in her big looping hand about the swallows nesting under the eaves at home and the pump in the yard that had finally quit. Her initials headed every page, the two letters tied together with a swoop that ran off the edge of the paper. She had drawn flowers around them, daft little things, and I had laughed at her for it in the last letter I sent.
Pym came in with the bread tray and asked what I was grinning at. I told him about the flowers and he said the sea made everyone soft, and I said it made him hard to live with. He took a heel of loaf and went back up the ladder without another word. I sat down on the flour sack with the pan still hissing and read her letter a second time.
When the watch changed I found a clean corner of the bill of fare and wrote back. I drew a little star beside her initials, then another, then a dot, and I told her the sky out here had stars enough without ours.
